A bridge connecting Kauswagan and Linamon in Lanao del Norte collapsed last night, leaving hundreds of commuters and vehicles stranded.

Police Supt. Madid Paitao, Provincial Police Office (PPO) director in Lanao del Norte, said half of the Napo bridge collapsed due to the swelling of Napo river.
Linamon is the eastern gateway to Lanao del Norte since it is the first municipality of Northern Mindanao.

It is about 11.5 kilometers southwest of Iligan city, bounded in the east by the Linamon River, the Larapan River and the municipality of Kauswagan in the west. It is a coastal town of Lanao del Norte. Five of its eight barangays are situated along the Iligan Bay area.

Supt. Paitao said the only mode of transportation being used by commuters are motor-outriggers.

“Long lines of vehicles are growing on both sides,” Supt. Paitao said.

He said checkpoints have been put up prior to entering Kauswagan and Linamon to advise commuters.

Northern Mindanao Regional Director Evelyn T. Barroso of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has ordered the District Engineers and technical officials to coordinate with the DPWH-District Engineering Office in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte in addressing the problem in the Napo River area.

Meanwhile, more than 900 families have evacuated in Barangay Kawit in Kauswagan. They have been temporarily housed at the gym and public schools.
